Wong Kar-wai on the Big Screen in Singapore

In the Mood for Love deserves more than your laptop.

Want to see In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express, or other Wong Kar-wai films on the big screen in Singapore? They rarely get theatrical screenings — but that's starting to change.

Wong Kar-wai's films are some of the most visually stunning ever made. The neon-soaked streets of Chungking Express. The slow-motion longing of In the Mood for Love. The sun-bleached melancholy of Happy Together. These films were made for cinema — for colour grading that fills your peripheral vision, for soundtracks that envelop the room. But in Singapore, catching a Wong Kar-wai film on the big screen means waiting for a rare repertory screening or a festival slot. Shaw Theatres showed In the Mood for Love during its 4K restoration run, but it was brief. Filmhouse at Golden Mile Tower and SFS Somerset at Cineleisure are the most likely venues for future screenings — both programme classic and restored films alongside new releases. Strata Film Club tracks demand for exactly these kinds of screenings. When enough people want to see Chungking Express projected properly, we organise it. Because watching Wong Kar-wai on a streaming service is like listening to vinyl through phone speakers. Technically possible. Completely wrong.
