Shaw Theatres indie films Singapore
Rarely. But things are changing.
Shaw Theatres is investing in premium cinema experiences with Lumiere Grand and new locations — but indie and arthouse films still barely feature in their programming. Here's the state of independent cinema at Shaw.
Shaw Theatres is having a moment. The Lido reopened in late 2025. Lumiere Grand launched in February 2026 — premium large-format screens, luxury seating, the works. A new cineplex at Shaw Oriental is coming later this year. They're spending money. But not on programming. Search for Marty Supreme at Shaw Theatres and you'll find nothing. Same for most A24 releases, Cannes winners, or anything outside the mainstream. Shaw has the venues. They have the screens. What they don't have is a serious commitment to independent cinema. That gap is being filled by smaller players — Filmhouse at Golden Mile Tower and SFS Somerset at Cineleisure are both screening the films Shaw won't touch. Strata Film Club is building a community around this same gap: organising screenings and tracking the films that Singapore audiences want to see but can't find at the chains. Shaw could be part of the solution. Until then, we are.
